The Choreographer is responsible for all movement aspects of the production, including developing routines, teaching them to performers, casting dancers, rehearsing for precision and expression, and making choreography changes as needed to bring the production to life through movement.
Key Responsibilities
Develop Routines: Create unique dance and movement sequences that complement the story, music, and themes of the musical.
Collaborate with the Director: Work closely with the director to understand the vision and translate it into cohesive dance pieces that support the show's narrative.
Interpret Music and Script: Read the script and listen to the music to understand the emotional content and then express it through physical movement.
Teach Movement and Choreo: Instruct performers on the specific dance steps, techniques, and expressions required for the routines.
Rehearse Dancers: Conduct rehearsals to refine the choreography, ensuring precise timing, technical execution, and emotional delivery from the performers.
Make Adjustments: Be prepared to make changes to choreography during rehearsals to better fit the performers or achieve desired effects.
Collaboration: Participate in production meetings and maintain clear and consistent communication with the creative team (Director, Choreographer, Stage Manager, Sound Designer, etc.).
Qualifications
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Dance, Theater or equivalent professional experience.
Previous experience as a choreographer for theater or dance shows, preferably with youth productions or large-scale musicals a plus.
Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to inspire and motivate others.
Must be highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work collaboratively under time pressure.
Flexible schedule for evening and weekend rehearsals and performances.
