Job Description

The Sitka Trial Court of the Alaska Court System (ACS) is accepting applications for Clerk of Court 3 (salary range 14). The incumbent will plan, implement, direct, and monitor all non-judicial activities of the Sitka Trial Court.

Personnel rules will be applied to determine step placement for the successful internal candidate.


Regular job duties include the following:

Provides leadership and professional technical support for all Clerk’s Office functions, including processing criminal, civil, probate, CINA, and minor offense cases; ensuring efficient case flow, accurate records, jury management, in-court procedures, customer service, warrants, and financial collections. Ensures compliance with Alaska Rules of Court and 1st District policies; manages and reports on case flow and court performance metrics; reviews and implements statutes, rules, and procedures; trains staff; serves as Probate Registrar; processes appeals and CINA cases; and provides coverage for Judicial Assistant duties as needed.


Responsible for allocating work; preparing and updating position descriptions; recruiting, hiring, training, counseling, evaluating, disciplining, and terminating a clerical staff of three; monitoring compliance with all applicable administrative and personnel rules and policies; and planning and conducting weekly staff meetings to enhance staff knowledge, skills, morale, and effective communication within the Sitka court.

  • Experience performing multiple tasks with frequent interruptions and remaining calm, organized, and accurate.
  • Experience interacting with supervisors, co-workers, and members of the public while working independently and as part of a team in a detail-oriented environment.
  • Experience working and/or living in rural Alaska.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.




This position is assigned to the court's classified service; incumbents will attain "regular" status after completion of the initial probationary period.



Work Hours
This position works in-person at the Sitka court and is not a remote position. Full-time court employees are scheduled to work 37.5-hours per week. The work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Minimum Qualifications

A high school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate AND two years of advanced general clerical or legal clerical work experience. The required work experience is met by service such as a Court Case Manager 1, Court Case Manager 2, Court Supervisor, Clerk of Court, Chambers Judicial Assistant, or Chief Deputy Clerk with the Alaska Court System or similar work experience with another employer.

OR

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in any field AND one year of advanced general clerical or legal clerical work experience. The required work experience is met by service such as a Court Case Manager 1, Court Case Manager 2, Court Supervisor, Clerk of Court, Chambers Judicial Assistant, or Chief Deputy Clerk with the Alaska Court System or similar work experience with another employer.

OR

A bachelor’s degree from an accredited college in business administration, public administration, criminal justice, or a closely related field.
